Morocco: Black Cat On A Blue Wall
Early on, in my 20s and before my career came together, a mentor for me was one of the leading color photographers of our time, Jay Maisel. I first met Jay when I was challenged trying to find my way in photography. He offered great advice, and eventually, through life's journey, I found my way to Japan and my own unique path to success.
One of the images of Jay's that I always loved was a window with two doves, one white, one black. He signed this image for me and it hung in our home for years. I always wanted to do my take on this kind of theme.
As a youngster studying the prints of 'Family of Man' at the Museum of Modern Art in NY I was always impressed with a powerful image from Morocco by Henri Cartier Bresson, a wall with children playing in the foreground.
Fast forward years later to our shoot in Morocco. During an early morning walk at first light I spotted this Black cat sitting elegantly against a blue wall. The light was right and the positioning perfect, it was a once in a lifetime chance. Natural light can be this magical.
I was just asked to make a large print of this image and was amazed how great it looks at this grand scale, I felt inspired and thought it might be a fun story to share.
